Hard Times in Hostess City

Mar. 26, 2025 • Patrick Chaussard

This past weekend the Charleston GAA sent a strong team of hurlers south to Savannah, Ga to take part in the Hostess City Hooley. The team was drawn into the group of death and did not make it out of group play, ending the day 0-3.

The team started out slow in the first match of the day against Orlando, giving up 2 goals in the first half. The second half was more even but Charleston only managed 1 point and lost by a final score of 2-3 to 0-1.

Charleston came out strong in the second game of the day against eventual tournament runners up Red Wolves. Na Darach put a scare into the team from Charlotte leading at the half 2-0 to 0-5 but the depth on the Red Wolves side proved to be too much and they pulled away late in the game.

In the final match of the day Charleston took on Atlanta, who needed a victory to guarantee a spot in the semi finals. In the end Atlanta proved to be too much for Charleston and won the hard fought contest. Both Atlanta and Red Wolves would win their respective semifinals over Knoxville and Augusta, with Atlanta avenging a group stage loss to claim the Hostess City Cup.

It was a great experience for the multiple players who made their tournament debuts. In particular Frank G won the player of the tournament mug for his strong play moving the sliotar through the mid field.

The club will look to build momentum at the final two Spring League games this coming Sunday and the following Sunday at 11:00 am at Hampton Park. The club will then host the annual Holy City Cup on April 12th at West Ashley High School. Come out and support or learn to play!
