2019 Fall Pub League - Week 5
Oct. 29, 2019 • Andrew Maron
There was a low turnout for week 5 of Fall Pub League as both teams struggled to get healthy players on the field after the 6th Annual Scruffy City Invitational. Team Wilson & Johnson only fielded six healthy players and Team Daps fielded eight. Team W&J borrowed Paul Moore from Team Daps to so that we could play a game of 7v7. Throwing convention into the wind, both teams agreed to played three 15-minute periods, counting only goals, no points. This forced both teams to work the ball up field and take shots on net. Team Daps started strong with high-pressure offense and ended the first period leading Team W&J by three goals (5 to 2).
After strategizing during first intermission, Team W&J took control on offense in the second period. Team Daps struggled to cover Joseph O’Callaghan and Paul Moore, and they capitalized on great passes from their defenders to charge the net and score. By the end of the second period, Team Daps cut the lead by one goal (8 to 7).
After a much-needed second intermission, the teams hobbled back onto the field for a contentious third period. Joseph O’Callaghan continued to put on a clinic at full forward, outpacing defenders and racking up multiple goals for Team W&J. Team Daps started to build momentum towards the end, but Team W&J’s lockdown defense denied their attempts at victory. The frustration was evident in Team Daps as forward Ryan Barrs received a yellow card for tossing his hurl after a failed attempt at goal in the final minutes.
At the last whistle, Team W&J had defeated Team Daps by three goals. Unfortunately, because Wilson&Johnson needed to borrow a player to field the league minimum of seven players, the game is officially a forfeit.
Joseph O’Callaghan earned this week’s MVP by unanimous decision for his commanding performance at forward. Congrats Joseph!
Final Score: Team Wilson & Johnson 14 goals to Team Daps 11 goals.
